Akroinon, battle of
Located near Amorion in Phrygia (qq.v.), Akroinon was where Leo III (q.v.) defeated an Arab army in 740, forcing the Arabs (q.v.) to withdraw from western Asia Minor (q.v.). This ended a phase of Arab-Byzantine warfare that began with the siege of Constantinople (q.v.) in 717-718, and which had threatened the very existence of Byzantium (q.v.).
